James K. Cardi, MD. completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Brown University. He is board-certified as an Internist by the American Board of Internal Medicine. Dr. Cardi was inspired to pursue a career in medicine by his father (a general surgeon) and uncle (a general practitioner), both of whom practiced in Rhode Island. He began practicing medicine in 1991, focusing on internal medicine.
Dr. Cardi has been practicing internal medicine during some of the biggest breakthroughs in medicine, including DNA sequencing, targeted cancer therapies, statin drugs for the prevention of heart disease, and effective replacements for arthritic knees and hips. Using complex strategies to properly diagnose patients, he loves to incorporate different teaching techniques for his patients. By teaching patients about their own healthcare, they understand how new research and procedures can help them reach their health goals.
Dr. Cardi believes that the focus of modern medicine has shifted from patient care to what he refers to as ‘third party care,’ with more time spent talking to insurance companies than patients. The continuing mission of his practice is to focus on patients, empowering each and every one with the right information they need to live healthier lives. Creating individualized plans, Dr. Cardi works together with patients to help them incorporate safe, effective, and realistic routines. He strives to help all his patients avoid non-applicable and misleading information that can stall progress, or even cause harm.
In his spare time, Dr. Cardi enjoys cooking, running his restaurant Trattoria Zooma, interior design, gardening, sculpting, traveling, sailing, and playing with his children. Trattoria Zooma is proud to support the Federal Hill House, a community outreach center in Providence.
